Financial and Economic Reporting
A 2-month training course to enable journalists to fulfill their role properly and to improve the quality of economic and financial reporting in their newspapers.
Globalisation has made countries and people more inter-dependent with each other as goods, services, capital, labour, know-how and information move rapidly and freely around the world. It is makes more and more difficult for the individual to understand and interpret these cross-border transactions. In order to make intelligent and responsible decisions in and for society, it is, however, crucial to understand the impact of multi-national exchange on our daily lives. The journalists is expected to comprehend events and explain them to their readers. They can fulfill this role only under the condition that they thoroughly understand the complex and multi-faceted array of globalization.
The programme is open to journalists who work for print media and who have a special interest in financial and economic reporting. They should:
• have a minimum of 4 years of professional experience;
• be not older than 35 years;
• be proficient in English;
• be given paid leave during the duration of the course.
Computer skills would be considered a bonus.
The course will include the following topics: Business news writing; Essential statistics; The logic of accounting; Reporting companies; Reporting markets; Consumer information; Reporting national budgets and economic policies; Covering the Central Bank, commercial banks and financial markets; Economic integration and regional organisations; The international financial system; The world trade system; Global economic issues; Writing feature stories.
Methods. The course will familiarize the group in lectures, discussions, exercises and field trips with the most important aspects of economics, business, and finance.
A strong emphasis will be on practical work. The participants will have to write reports and features that will be analyzed in order to improve the journalistic quality. During a
fact-finding tour through Germany the participants will have the opportunity to establish contacts with important enterprises and both financial and research institutions.
