The Department of Education aimed at assessing the prevalence, severity and impact of oral diseases, as crucial and vital information for the development of effective and sustainable school based health programs. The results of the survey revealed that 97.1% of 6 year old children suffer from caries and 84.7% even show symptoms of dental infection. In addition 20% of the 6 year old and 16% of the 12 year old children reported to have problems in their mouth at the time when they were questioned. “The results of the survey show the huge burden of disease among Filipino school children. In addition, we found that more than 25% of the children are underweight and majority of children suffer from skin disease, parasites and other signs of generally poor hygiene”, said Dr. Bella Monse, CIM-Consultant to the Department of Education and Coordinator of the survey.
